Workers of Synthetic Fibres Limited on Monday staged a protest in front of the factory gate in the BSCIC industrial area in Gazipur to press home their nine-point demand, including regular payment and job regularisation.
At around 3:00pm, the police foiled their attempt to block the Dhaka-Tangail highway near their factory at Konabari.
Inspector of Gazipur Industrial Police-2 for the Konabari Zone Morshed Jaman said that the workers initially demonstrated in front of the factory’s main gate.
Later, they tried to block the highway demanding their September wages by Monday, but they were dispersed by the police. Â
The workers alleged that they had been protesting for long, but the factory authorities did not pay heed to their demands. Â
Synthetic Fibres Limited administrative officer Aorangajeb Khan said that the salaries of September would be paid by 12:00 noon on October 16, and the other demands would be accepted in phases.
Their demands include payment of monthly salaries within seven to ten working days of the following month, ensuring the attendance bonus for workers who take medical leave, and making sure that only the appointed doctor of the factory’s medical centre has the authority to approve medical leave.
Other demands include a minimum night allowance of Tk 150, payment of accumulated earned leave every January, and permission for workers to use button phones during working hours.
Their other demands are: workers who resign must receive their service benefits immediately, and no worker be terminated without cause and terminated workers must be paid their current month’s wage plus three months and thirteen days’ wage, along with all benefits.  Â
