Bangladesh Betar, the state-run radio service, is planning to reinstate its Urdu service, which was closed in 2019.
Mohammad Salahuddin, the additional director general of programmes, emphasised that the service would enhance Bangladesh's global image and promote its history and culture.
Currently, Bangladesh Betar broadcasts five hours of daily programming in Bengali, English, Arabic, Hindi, and Nepali.
The proposal for the Urdu service was formally submitted by A Salam, representing various artistes, to the director general of Bangladesh Betar.
Discussions are ongoing, with final approval pending from the DG and confirmation from the ministry.
Since its inception in January 1972, Bangladesh Betar's external services have evolved, initially launching with English and Hindi broadcasts.
The programmes are now accessible via shortwave, mobile app, and the website.
