
Defending champions Mohammedan Sporting Club made a disappointing start in the Bangladesh Football League, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Fortis Football Club at the Kings Arena in the city on Saturday.
The promoted PWD Sports Club made a surprise comeback for a 2-2 draw against the five-time champions Bashundhara Kings at the Shaheed Barkat Stadium in Gazipur.
In the other match, Police Football Club handed a solitary goal defeat to Brothers Union at the Birshreshtha Flight Lt Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj.
In the day’s play, Fortis FC’s Gambian midfielder Pa Omar Babou (61st, 69th) scored a brace against Mohammedan, leading his team to the top position in the 10-team table, above Police FC.
Police FC’s earned the win over Brothers, courtesy of Brazilian forward Paulo Santos’ 42nd-minute strike.
In Gazipur, Kings went to break with a 2-0 cushion as their Brazilian forward Dorielton Gomes opened the account in the 13th minute before local forward Foysal Ahmed Fahim added once in the second minute of the stoppage time.
The PWD SC returned to the game with their Uzbekistani midfielder, Turaev Akobir, converting a spot kick in the 60th minute, while local forward Arman Foysal Akash scored the equaliser in the 72nd minute.
Fortis FC and Police FC both earned three points each. PWD SC, Arambagh Krira Sangha, Fakirerpool Young Mens Club, Abahani Limited and Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society all earned one point each and held the places from the third to eighth, respectively.
Brothers and Mohammedan are in the ninth and 10th places. Â Â Â
The league will resume on October 19, following the Bangladesh national team’s AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers match against Hong Kong at home on October 9, before their away game on October 14.
