A 90-year-old woman was killed after being trapped in a fire that broke out in her home at Gobindapur village under Matlab South in Chandpur on Sunday.

The deceased was Jeora Khatun.

As her two sons and a daughter live elsewhere due to work and family commitments, the elderly woman used to live alone in the house.

Abdur Sattar, an assistant teacher at a local high school and a resident of the village, said that Jeora Khatun went to bed around 10:00pm on Saturday night after having dinner.

On Sunday morning, the fire suddenly erupted in her house but she could not be rescued despite attempts.

The fire is believed to have started due to an electrical short circuit and spread quickly.

Officer-in-charge Saleh Ahmed of Matlab South police said that police were sent to the spot but no formal complaint had been filed.
