More than 10 lakh taxpayers so far submitted their income tax returns online for the financial year 2025-26, reflecting growing public confidence in Bangladesh’s expanding digital tax system, according to a press release issued by the National Board of Revenue.

Earlier, finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed officially inaugurated the e-return submission system on August 4.

According to the press release issued on Thursday, taxpayers could easily complete and submit their returns through the NBR’s online portal — www.etaxnbr.gov.bd — in just a few minutes.

This year, the NBR has made online filing of income tax returns mandatory for all categories of individual taxpayers except for senior citizens aged 65 or above, physically challenged or with special-needs taxpayers, Bangladeshi taxpayers  residing abroad, legal representatives of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.

While these exempted groups may still file online voluntarily, those unable to register for e-filing due to technical difficulties can apply to their respective deputy tax commissioners by November 15 of this year, with proper justification to receive approval for paper return submission.

From this year, authorised representatives could also submit e-returns on behalf of taxpayers.

For Bangladeshi citizens living abroad, the NBR has made it possible to register remotely by sending passport, NID and email details to [email protected]. Applicants can then receive a one-time password and a registration link via email to complete the process.

Taxpayers could now submit their income, expenditure, asset, and liability details digitally without uploading any documents. Once filed, they would instantly receive an acknowledgment slip and a printable tax certificate, making the system faster, paperless and hassle-free.

To make e-filing easier, the NBR has also conducted training sessions for taxpayers and authorised professionals, including income tax lawyers, chartered accountants, cost and management accountants, and chartered secretaries.

Moreover, a dedicated call centre (09643-717171) has been set up to provide instant support for e-return queries.

The press release also stated that taxpayers could also seek written assistance through the ‘eTax Service’ option on the website or visit local e-return help desks across all tax zones during office hours for in-person support.

The NBR urged all eligible taxpayers to file their FY26 income tax returns online by November 30 by using the e-return platform.
