The next election of the Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh is expected to be held in early September, as the top-level cricketers met at the BCB Academy premises in Mirpur on Wednesday.

It was learnt that the most likely date of the long-overdue election is September 5.Ìý

The timing corresponds well, as most players will be in Dhaka for mandatory fitness tests ahead of the domestic season at that time.Ìý

The season is scheduled to begin with the NCL T20, which is expected to begin on September 15.Ìý

‘We are thinking of holding the election on September 4 or 5. Most players will be present for the NCL fitness test, so that date makes sense,’ said a player present in the meeting.Ìý

‘One of the ad-hoc committee members mentioned it as a probable date, but the rest need to agree. We have one or two more meetings to finalise it, but September 5 looks the most likely,’ he added.Ìý

However, it was learnt that during the meeting little interest was shown by the players present to contest in an election. But there was excitement around the probable election.Ìý

CWAB, which is affiliated with the World Cricketers’ Association, formed a new ad-hoc committee after dissolving the previous one in March.Ìý

The previous committee, which was led by Naimur Rahman (President) and Debabrata Paul, was in charge for almost 11 years.

Former cricketer and present match referee Salim Shahed is leading the current ad-hoc committee, which includes Minhajul Abedin, Niyamur Rashid, Habibul Bashar, and Debabrata—the general secretary of the previous committee—among others.

Eight players from eight divisions—Arafat Sunny (Dhaka), Irfan Shukkur (Chattogram), Najmul Hossain Shanto (Rajshahi), Nurul Hasan (Khulna), Mosaddek Hossain (Mymensingh), Zakir Hasan (Sylhet), Kamrul Islam (Barishal), and Naeem Islam (Rangpur)—are also in the committee.Ìý
