Finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed on Monday said that there would be no shortage of fund for holding the Jatiya Sangsad elections and the referendum on the same day.
He also commented that the political government was essential to check price hikes of essentials while responding to a question as to why the price of rice was not decreasing following the harvest of aman paddy.
The finance adviser was talking to reporters after presiding over a meeting of the advisory council committee on government purchase at the secretariat.
Observing that activists of the political party in power become useful to check unethical practices of traders in manipulating prices of essentials, the finance adviser said that the current interim government was solely dependent on the administration.
He disclosed that the budgetary allocation for the Election Commission would have an upward revision to enable the holding of the JS elections and the referendum on the same day.
Holding both events on the same day will involve extra cost, he said, adding that greater manpower had to be engaged for security and logistics.
Supporting the decision to hold both the events on the same day, he commented that the task would be challenging for the Election Commission.
Earlier, the advisory council committee on government purchase approved a number of proposals, including the procurement of 50,000 non-Basmati rice and the import of refined fuel oils through international tenders at a cost of about Tk 10,979 crore for the January-June consumption period in the next year.
M/S Agrocrop International Pte Ltd of Singapore will supply the rice as the firm has won the international tender from the food ministry quoting Tk 216.43 crore.
