Medical experts at a seminar said that in this era of technological development, there is no scope of avoiding robotic surgery as robotic surgery can make a great contribution to improving medical services.

Bangladesh Medical University organised a University Central Seminar on ‘The Role of Robotics in Surgery’ at the A Block auditorium on Monday.


The seminar was organised the Central Seminar Sub-Committee to discuss how this cutting-edge technology can be used to provide international standard medical services to the people of the country, the advantages and disadvantages of this technology.

The seminar was addressed as the chief guest by BMU’s vice-chancellor Professor Md Shahinul Alam. He said that introducing robotic surgery in Bangladesh is a dream and its successful implementation is possible with the joint efforts of teachers, doctors, and students.

The special guests were the pro-vice chancellor (administration) Professor Md Abul Kalam Azad, pro-vice chancellor (research and development) Professor Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader, treasurer Professor Nahrin Akhtar, dean of the Faculty of Surgery Professor Md Ibrahim Siddique.

At the seminar, BMU's General Surgery Department associate professor Mohammad Farooq Ishtiaq presented an article on 'Robotic Surgery: Our Perspective' and Colorectal Surgery Department assistant professor Krishna Pada Saha presented an article on 'The Role of Robotics in Surgery'.

They said that the advantages of robotic surgery are that the operation can be performed through small incisions, complications are reduced, the patient can return to his normal life quickly, bleeding is reduced, pain after the operation is reduced, etc.

The advantages for the surgeon are that it is easier to perform complex surgical steps by seeing three-dimensional images of every moment, movement with the help of a robot device is easier and safer than with human hands, hand tremors can be completely avoided, the surgeon can operate for a long time while sitting in a comfortable chair, an experienced surgeon from another place can instruct the trainee surgeon to take steps or complete the surgery.

Central seminar sub-committee chairman Professor Afzalun Nesa provided over the seminar moderated by cardiologist Deen-e-Mujahid Md Faruk Osmani.
