At least five people were killed and around 20 others injured when a passenger bus rammed into a stationary truck on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram on Sunday evening.
The accident took place around 6:00pm in the Bottola area of Sitakunda municipality on the Chattogram-bound lane, said Md Zakir Rabbani, officer-in-charge of Kumira Highway Police Station.
Highway police said all five victims were men, though their identities were yet to be confirmed.
OC Zakir Rabbani said that a CDM Paribahan bus hit the stationary truck, before colliding with a roadside tree, and plunged into a ditch.
‘We have recovered five bodies so far. Four died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries after being taken to Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex,’ he said.
He added that several passengers sustained severe injuries, and the exact number of injured was still being assessed.
Dr Mohammad Imran, emergency department physician at Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex, said 20 injured passengers were admitted to the hospital.
Of them, 12 have been referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
