An overseas worker, who returned from Cambodia recently, was hacked to death at Lakshmipur village under sadar upazila in Jhenaidah on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Mahabul Hossain, 40, son of Sabdar Biswas, a resident of Lakshmipur in the upazila.
Quoting local people, Jhenaidah police station officer-in-charge Abdullah Al Mamun said that there had been a longstanding dispute between Mahabul and Robiul Islam Robi over taking lease of a piece of land.
As a consequence of the dispute, the supporters of Robi locked into an altercation with Mahabul over the issue while he was returning home from field.
They, at one point, attacked him and hacked him with a sharp weapon, leaving him critically injured on the spot, the police official said.
Hearing his screams, locals rescued him and took him to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital where duty doctor pronounced him dead upon arrival.
The police sent the body to the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any kind of untoward incident, the police official said, adding that legal action would be taken against those found involved in the incident.
