Former acting mayor of Nalchity municipality and four other leaders and activists of the Awami League were arrested at different parts in Dhaka, allegedly for disrupting law and order by bringing out flash processions.

Two teams of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch carried out operations in the capital and arrested the five between 5:00pm on Monday and 7:30am on Tuesday, said a press release issued by the metropolitan police.

The release said that a team of DB’s Gulshan Division arrested Jhalakati’s Nalchity municipality former acting mayor, Faruk Hossain, 61, at Basabo under Sabujbagh police station in Dhaka Tuesday morning.

It said that a team of the DB’s Wari Division arrested Md Rubel, 28, Md Khokon, 40, Md Sagar, 40, and Md Shanto, 24, at Bhatara in the city Monday evening. Preliminary interrogation revealed that the arrestees were involved in organising flash processions and activities under the banner of Awami League and its associated organisations in various parts of Dhaka, the press release claimed.

It also said that they participated in rallies under the banner of an organisation titled Sheikh Hasina Sangram Parishad.

Leaders and activists of the AL and its associates have recently been staging flash processions across the capital despite law enforcers’ strict stance on such processions.

The activities of the Awami League are now banned.
