The Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court on Tuesday ordered the Anti-Corruption Commission to seize 469 acres of land owned by S Alam Group owner Mohammad Saiful Alam and persons associated with his interests.
The court also imposed a travel ban on five people, including Laila Arjumand Banu, wife of the late Awami League minister Mohammad Nasim, and their son, former lawmaker Tanvir Shakil Joy, in connection with graft charges.
The court’s judge, Md Sabbir Faiz, passed the orders, allowing separate petitions filed by the ACC, said ACC deputy director for public relations Aktarul Islam.
Of the assets, 8.58 acres of land are at Sadar upazila and 4.86 acres at Sreepur upazila in Gazipur, and 272.28 acres are at Pekua, 180.28 acres at Moheskhali, 2.12 acres at Sadar upazila, and 0.97 acres at Chakaria Sadar in Cox’s Bazar district.
The ACC in its plea said that it had already formed a team to probe money-laundering allegations against Saiful Alam and persons associated with his interests.
The probe revealed that Saiful Alam, along with his associated entities and individuals connected to those entities, unlawfully obtained loans from various banks under fictitious names and misappropriated the funds to acquire substantial assets both at home and abroad.
The ACC further said that based on information obtained from multiple sources during the investigation, it was learnt that he and his family members were attempting to transfer or dispose of the immovable properties linked to their interests.
The same court on February 23 ordered the ACC to freeze 227 bank accounts with a combined balance of Tk 813.56 crore of Saiful Alam and his family members over the allegations of amassing illegal wealth and money laundering.
Earlier, the court on different occasions ordered the ACC to freeze shares of various companies in home and abroad and several hundred acres of land owned by Saiful Alam, his family members and associated entities in the country following ACC petitions.
The court also ordered the authorities concerned to seek an Interpol Red Notice against Saiful Alam and his brothers Abdus Samad, vice-chairman of S Alam Group, and Mohammad Abdullah Hasan, director of the business group.
Several cases have already filed against Saiful Alam and his family members over graft allegations.
Regarding the court order imposing a travel ban, the other individuals barred from leaving the country are Nasim’s another son Tamal Monsur, Joy’s wife Sabrina Sultana Chowdhury, and Nasim’s personal secretary Mir Mosharraf Hossain.
ACC deputy director Afroza Haque Khan submitted the petition that stated that Tanvir Shakil Joy is accused of abusing power, committing irregularities, and engaging in corruption to amass wealth which was allegedly transacted through bank accounts held in his and his associates’ names.
A three-member team has been formed to probe allegations of illegally acquired wealth and money laundering.
The petition stated that information suggested that the accused had attempted to flee abroad.
Tanvir Shakil Joy, a senior leader of the Awami Sechchhasebok League, was elected lawmaker from Sirajganj-1 in 2008, 2020 and again in the 2024 parliamentary elections as an Awami League candidate.
The Awami League regime was ousted on August 5 past year in a mass uprising.
