Bangladesh interim government chief adviser’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam on Sunday said that the Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2026 would be held in February with some adjustments to the schedule due to the national election slated for the first half of the month.
Bangla Academy, the organiser of the month-long event, will discuss with all stakeholders to make the adjustments to the schedule of the fair which usually begins on the first day of February, he said.
The press secretary made the remarks as chief guest at a discussion titled ‘What kind of book fair we want’, organised by the Baisamyabirodhi Srijonshil Grantha Prakashak Samity at the National Press Club in the capital Dhaka.
Chaired by association’s president Saeed Bari, Jatiya Kabita Parishad president Mohon Raihan and journalist Gaziul Hasan Khan, among others, spoke at the event which also unveiled 17 books published by the member organisations of the association.
Gaziul Hasan Khan said that the academy should organise effective book fairs according to the situation instead of making the event just stylish and expensive one.
During the fascist regime only its collaborators got allocation of pavilions at the fair, he said.
Mohon Raihan said that although the book fair was organised by the government, people were the main stakeholders of the event.
‘We will organise the book fair in February because the book fair cannot be postponed due to election,’ Mohon said, adding that the prestigious Amar Ekushey Book Fair was for all, not for any specific political parties.
Bangla Academy director general Mohammad Azam said that adjustments to the Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2026 timetable would be planned once the government announced the national election schedule.
Bangla Academy on September 28 decided to postpone the book fair due to Jatiya Sangsad elections after it scheduled the fair between December 17, 2025 and January 17, 2026.
