Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Sreeshanto Roy was sent to jail after he was arrested on Wednesday morning amid student protests.
Sreeshanto, a student of BUET’s electrical and electronic engineering department, was arrested amid protests against alleged rape, sexual harassment and religious defamation by him on Tuesday night.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam issued the order to send Sreeshanto to jail after the police produced him before court in a case filed with the Chawk Bazar police station.
Chawk Bazar police station officer-in-charge Ashraf Uz Zaman said that Sreeshanto was arrested under the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025 on charges of online obscene comments and hurting religious sentiments.
But, no case was filed against him on allegations of rape and sexual harassment, he said.
The BUET campus became tense on Tuesday night as students staged protests from 9:00pm till midnight, demanding the expulsion and punishment of Sreeshanto, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·â€™s Dhaka University correspondent.
The protests erupted after several screenshots of Sreeshanto’s remarks went viral on social media, prompting hundreds of students to gather on the campus.
Amid the protests, Sreeshanto was temporarily expelled the same night, while the university authorities also decided to file a case against him.
Later that night, BUET students’ welfare director professor AKM Masud told the protesting students that the authorities had issued a suspension order in response to their demand.
However, the students rejected the announcement and demanded Sreeshanto’s permanent expulsion.
In response, professor Masud said, ‘I do not have the authority to permanently cancel a student’s enrolment.’
The university authorities have decided to file the case on behalf of the students considering their concerns although it was supposed to be filed by the students, he added.
Meanwhile, Jahangirnagar University unit of the Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad, the student wing of the National Citizen Party, formed a human chain on the JU campus, protesting at the ongoing violence against women across the country and demanding punishment of BUET student Sreeshanto, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·â€™s JU correspondent.
