Dhaka University students early Friday brought out a torch procession expressing solidarity with the ongoing movement of the north Bengal people’s demand for fair share of Teesta water, protection of riverside dwellings and croplands from erosion, and immediate implementation of the Teesta Master Plan.
The procession began at around 12:30am from the base of the Anti Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture and marched through the campus before ending with a brief rally.
The protesters chanted slogans including ‘People die on Teesta banks, ‘what does the interim government do’ and ‘give us our fair share of water’.
Expressing solidarity with the cause, Dhaka University’s Salimullah Muslim Hall provost Professor Abdullah Al Mamun said that the people of the country’s northern districts had long been suffering due to India’s aggressive attitude.
‘We, the people of Bengal, will no longer tolerate this. India must ensure our rightful share of Teesta water,’ the provost said.
He also urged all political organisations active on campus, regardless of party affiliation, to unite and work together for the implementation of the Teesta Master Plan.
