A concert at a convention centre in Chattogram city was foiled on Saturday night following violence that reportedly erupted after slogans were chanted in favour of the ousted prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.
A youth, Md Sharif, 23, who sustained bullet injuries during the violence, is now undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, the police and hospital authorities said.
The violence occurred at about 8:30pm at the GEC Convention Centre under Khulshi police station in the city.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s additional deputy commissioner (media) Srima Chakma said that the police filed a case with Khulshi police station and they arrested 10 people for their suspected involvement in the violence.
She said that the 10 people were produced before a metropolitan magistrate court in Chattogram that sent them to jail.
A ‘Fun and Rock Fest’ concert was organised at the convention centre by motorcycle manufacturing company Honda and the event was open to all. Popular band Artcell was scheduled to perform there.
A large crowd had gathered since evening, but the concert was disrupted shortly after it began when a clash broke out following slogans in favour of Hasina.
Videos circulating on social media show some people in the audience chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ and ‘Sheikh Hasina’ slogans near the stage. After that, chaos broke out, and a number of people screaming and vandalising the venue.
A group then attempted to break the main gate of the convention centre, prompting law enforcement personnel to fire gunshots to bring the situation under control.
Additional DC Srima Chakma, quoting the officer-in-charge of Khulshi police station, said that the event was organised by Honda, and the organisers did not take permission for the concert.
‘Some unruly youths started vandalising the venue. Police went to the spot, charged batons, and fired eight rounds from shotguns to control the situation,’ she said.
