The Bangladesh Coast Guard in a statement on Thursday said that they were working to increase public awareness among fishermen and fish traders on the occasion of the Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign 2025.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq on Thursday said that since its establishment, the Bangladesh Coast Guard had been making a contribution to the security of the sea, coastal and riverine areas of the country, said the press release.
In addition, to protect Bangladesh鈥檚 fisheries resources, strict surveillance and constant Coast Guard campaigns are continuing to prevent the killing of jatka and conserve mother hilsa.
According to the Protection and Conservation Fish Act-1950, to protect the mother hilsa during the breeding season and preserve the breeding grounds of hilsa, the collection, transportation, storage, marketing and purchase and sale of hilsa will be prohibited throughout the country for 22 days from October 4 to October 25.
On this occasion, the Coast Guard West Zone has taken all measures to implement the mother hilsa conservation programme.
To enforce the restrictions, intelligence surveillance is being increased on the rivers and sea coast and patrols are being conducted all day and night.
Miking, leaflet distribution and discussion meetings are also being organised to increase awareness among fishermen and everyone is being urged to obey the law.
The Coast Guard is also taking legal action against lawbreakers by conducting coordinated operations with the district administration, fisheries department, navy, police and other organisations.
At the same time, the patrolling ships of the Coast Guard are always on alert to prevent fishing trawlers from neighbouring countries from entering Bangladesh鈥檚 waters and harvesting fish.
In addition, the Coast Guard is always ready to provide immediate assistance if you call the emergency service number 16111 for any need on the coast and at sea.
