The Anti-Corruption Commission conducted a raid on the Bangladesh Railway’s western headquarters in Rajshahi city on Wednesday, following allegations of misappropriation of nearly Tk 4 crore in the purchase of stones and other railway equipment.
A three-member enforcement team led by Amir Hossain, assistant director of the ACC’s Rajshahi district integrated office, conducted the drive on the western railway chief commercial manager’s office at about 1:00pm and collected various documents.
Amir Hossain told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they conducted the drive following audit findings that railway authorities had shown inflated expenditure in several procurement items, including rail track stones, train repair tools, cleaning materials, printers, walkie-talkie batteries, televisions, clothes, floor mats and paper during the 2021–22 financial year.
‘The audit objections, raised in 2021, had not been resolved by the railway. That is why we have launched an investigation,’ he said, adding that they had collected all documents and records from the railway office relating to the purchase.
‘We are now checking these documents. If irregularities are confirmed, we will submit a report to the ACC head office, requesting for legal action against the accused officials,’ he further said.
The west railway chief commercial manager could not be reached over phone for comments.
Farid Ahmed, general manager of west railway, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he had recently joined the office and was not aware of the irregularities allegedly happened several years ago.
‘The ACC enforcement team asked documents relating to procurement of several items during the 2021–22 financial year and we have provided them with the documents accordingly,’ he said, adding, ‘They will now verify the documents.’
