The Bangladesh Coast Guard is conducting extensive public awareness activities in Chandpur to ensure the conservation of the national fish, Hilsa, during its key breeding period.
The information was confirmed by coast guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq on Tuesday through a press release.
The initiative supports a nationwide 22-day ban on the harvesting, transportation, and sale of Hilsa, effective from October 4 to October 25, 2025, under the Fisheries Protection and Conservation Act-1950, said the release.
To enforce the prohibition, the Coast Guard has intensified 24-hour river and coastal patrols and boosted intelligence surveillance. The force is also engaging local communities through miking, leaflet distribution, and discussion meetings to encourage compliance with the law.
Siam-ul-Haq highlighted that continuous operations against illegal artisanal trawlers, which destroy marine biodiversity, have significantly reduced their use. This is expected to increase fish stocks in the long term. The Coast Guard is conducting these drives in coordination with the district administration, fisheries department, and other relevant agencies, with legal action being taken against violators.
