Narsingdi Sadar Circle additional superintendent of Police Anwar Hossain was seriously injured in an attack by the accomplices of extortionists who had been detained by the police on Saturday.

The attack occurred at Arshinagar intersection in Narsingdi municipality at around 11:00am, shortly after the police had detained two extortionists while they were collecting money from drivers of battery-powered auto-rickshaws and other vehicles in Narsingdi city.

Injured Anwar said that a team led by him went to recover a woman’s body in the Puranpara area of Sadar upazila at around 9:00am.

On their way back, he and his accompanying force caught two extortionists red-handed while they were forcibly collecting money from vehicle drivers in the middle of the road at Arshinagar intersection, he said.

Following the incident, a group of up to 40 people appeared and threatened Anwar, demanding that he release the arrested extortionists, the police said.

When he refused, they began beating, punching, and kicking him, leaving him injured and during the scuffle, the group snatched away the two detainees, he added.

Later, Anwar was brought to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where he received primary treatment before being transferred to Dhaka’s Rajarbagh Police Hospital for advanced care.

Narsingdi Sadar Hospital residential medical officer Farida Gulshan Kabir said that Anwar had suffered blood clots in the neck and legs due to the assault.

A few days earlier, Anwar had announced on his Facebook account of a zero-tolerance policy to stop extortion on Narsingdi roads and had expressed fear that he could be attacked at any time.
