Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology authorities on Monday handed over a leader of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of Awami League, to the police after he came to the campus to attend classes.
The detainee was Sheikh Sajjad Hossain alias Sayed, organising secretary of BCL RUET unit and a 2019–20 session student of the materials science and engineering department.
Witnesses said that Sajjad came to the university to attend classes in the morning, prompting protests from fellows.
Later, the agitating students took Sajjad to the university student welfare office where he was then handed over to the Motihar police.
Students alleged that Sajjad had long been involved in abuse of power, repression of students in the residential halls, issuing threats, and legitimising the attack on students during the July 2024 uprising.
RUET student welfare office director Professor Robiul Islam Sarker said that a group of agitated students brought the BCL leader from his classroom to his office.
‘Later, he was handed over to the police. The police will take legal action,’ he added.
Motihar police officer-in-charge Abdul Malek said that they were checking whether there was any case filed against Sajjad.
‘The RUET authorities have not lodged any complaint,’ he added.
