This is the first batch of High Court appointments made through the Judicial Appointment Council, which was formed under the Supreme Court Appointment Ordinance, 2025 passed by the interim government.
In October 2024 the interim government appointed for the first time a total of 23 additional HC judges after a total of 12 High Court judges sent on leaves after the Sheikh Hasina government was ousted following the July 2024 mass uprising.
The Supreme Judicial Appointment Council earlier conducted viva voce interviews of at least 60 shortlisted candidates for the posts of additional High Court judges.
The council received nearly 300 applications in response to a public notice and shortlisted 60 candidates through an initial screening and review process.
The council recommended the 25 candidates for appointment.
The application process began on May 28, when the Supreme Court Registrar issued a public notice inviting interested candidates to apply.
Applicants were asked to submit their forms along with a passport-sized photo by June 22, either by post or in person to the Registrar General’s Office of the Supreme Court.
This marks the first round of applications under the newly formed Supreme Judicial Appointment Council, established through an ordinance issued by the interim government on January 21. The council was created under Article 95 of the Constitution, which was adopted in 1971 but had not been fully implemented until now.
The SJAC is now responsible for recommending names for appointments to the Supreme Court.
