A truck driver was stabbed to death by muggers on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Ashulia’s Bishmail area, adjacent to Jahangirnagar University campus, on Monday morning.

The victim was identified as Shamim Hossain, son of Abdus Samad of Govindapur village under Shahjadpur upazila in Sirajganj.


He was a resident of Munshiganj’s Muktarpur area and worked as a driver for Shah Cement Company, transporting cement in Dhaka and nearby districts.

Witnesses said that around 8:00am locals found Shamim lying in a pool of blood after suspected muggers attacked him.

Rickshaw-puller Sagar Ali, who took him to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, said, ‘I saw a crowd at Bishmail and found Shamim bleeding heavily. With the help of others, I rushed him to the hospital.’

Attending physician Yusuf Ali of Enam Medical College hospital confirmed that Shamim was dead when brought in.

‘He had lost too much blood. There was no chance to provide treatment,’ he said.

Shah Cement Company inspector Md Hanif Sikder said, ‘We heard muggers stabbed our driver and left him on the road. We are yet to know what was looted from him.’

Savar Highway Police sub-inspector Mehedi Hasan said, ‘We recovered the body and prepared an inquest report.’

‘A deep stab wound was found above his knee. The body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy,’ he said.

Police said an investigation was underway but no arrests were made till filing of this report on Monday afternoon.
