A group of suspected robbers fired more than one hundred shots targeting the newly opened police camp in Jamalpur village under Gazaria upazila in Munshiganj on Monday.

According to witnesses and the police, the attack was carried out targeting the police camp by the members of a robber group, allegedly led by Nayan and Pias.

Munshiganj superintendent of police Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar said that the robbers probably went to the river to collect extortion money from local people, but failed due to the presence of the police, triggering them to carry out the attack.

Gazaria police station officer-in-charge Md Anwar Alam Azad said that the incident occurred at about 5:00pm on Monday as at least 30 miscreants led by Piyas came in five trawlers and started firing targeting the police camp.

At that time, the robbers also fired four or five cocktails targeting the police camp, he said.

He also said that the police opened fire to disperse the miscreants.

‘No police personnel were hurt during the firings, but it is yet to be confirmed whether any of the miscreants were hurt,’ added the OC.

On August 22, a temporary police camp was opened in the village to reduce the activities of the robber groups active in the area.
