The families of a section of those killed and injured during the 2024 July–August uprising staged a sit-in outside the Secretariat in Dhaka on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of law adviser Asif Nazrul.

They began their protest in front of the National Press Club at about 11:00am.

After a brief demonstration there, the protesters marched to gate number 2 of the Secretariat at about 12:30pm and began to stage a sit-in by blocking traffic and disrupting vehicular movement around the key-point installation.

They left the road after 3:00pm.

Alleging that the accused in the July massacre cases were securing bail in exchange for money, the demonstrators demanded the immediate resignation of the adviser and judges.

Bulbul Karim, the father of martyr Alif Ahmed Siam, said that although a year had passed, there had still been no justice for his son’s murder.

‘The government is making a mockery of justice. We see that the accused are obtaining bail by paying money. But, the law adviser is taking no action.’

Abul Hasan, the father of Shahriar Hasan Alvi, said that they had spoken to the law adviser multiple times.

He said that the adviser only offered them consolation each time and sent them back.

Following the protest, adviser Asif Nazrul, in a Facebook post, wrote, ‘In a case filed by the family of a July victim, the High Court has granted bail to a member of the police force. Naturally, this has angered the families of the martyrs.’

Noting that the High Court is a ‘superior court of the country and does not fall under the jurisdiction of the ministry,’ he said, ‘Therefore, neither the bail order nor any other decision of the High Court is connected to the law ministry.’

‘Although the High Court is a superior court, its decisions are not beyond question. So, the attorney general’s office has already appealed against the bail order. A decision in this regard (on the appeal) may come tomorrow (Wednesday). If the bail is cancelled, police will arrest the accused officer,’ the post read.

The Awami League regime was ousted from power on August 5, 2024 amid the student-led mass uprising.
