Independent University of Bangladesh associate professor Mohammad Sarwar Hossain and Manarat University lecturer Asif Mahtab Utsha allegedly received death threats in a post of a Facebook account named ‘Antarctica Chowdhury’ on Tuesday.
Mohammad Sarwar Hossain filed a general diary with the Vatara police station on Wednesday in this connection.
Vatara police officer-in-charge Md Rakibul Hasan said that they had recorded the GD.
‘We will file the complaint to the cyber unit to identify the Facebook account,’ the OC added.
The Facebook post features a cartoon of Mohammad Sarwar Hossain with the caption ‘kill public figures who are against your marriage rights’. A picture of a machete is also drawn next to this face.
A sketch of Asif Mahtab Utsha’s face is drawn with the caption ‘Play football with the severed head of public figures who are against your legal rights’. A picture of two people about to kick the teacher’s head has also been drawn in this picture.
Mohammad Sarwar Hossain is an associate professor at IUB's School of Environment and Life Sciences.
Asif Mahtab is also a public speaker. In 2023, he came into the spotlight after criticising the transgender story included in the Class VII textbook.
Regarding the death threat, Sarwar Hossain said, 'This is not only a threat to us, but also to freedom of expression. I demand that the threat makers be identified and brought to justice immediately.'
