Protesting at the death of a small boy in a road accede`nt, local people in Munshiganj blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram national highway at Gazaria upazila on Saturday.

The blockade led to vehicles being stranded at both sides of the highway for half an hour, causing traffic congestion amid people鈥檚 suffering.


Earlier on August 7, five-year old Sarafat was killed and a five-year old girl named Jamia was injured when a trailer truck of Shamuda Chemical Industry hit a wall which fell on the two children.

On that day, local people blocked Hosendi-Jamaldi Road for an hour in protest.

Following a pre-scheduled announcement, at around 11:00am on Saturday the inhabitants of Hosendi union under the upazila started a protest procession from Jamaldi that marched to Dhaka-Chattogram highway up to Hamdard University.

The protesters after blocking the highway returned to Jamaldi bus stand to hold a rally where they raised a five-point demand.

They demanded justice for Sarafat and compensation for his family; fixed time for the movement of heavy vehicles on these roads, repairs of dilapidated roads; construction of drains besides the roads; and police patrol on the roads.聽

At the rally, Aslamuzzoha Chowdhury Gazaria, former general secretary of Juba Dal, youth organisation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, warned of tougher movement if the demands were not met.
