The rising water level of the River Jamuna, driven by onrushing waters from upstream and persistent heavy rainfall, has sparked fears of potential flooding among local residents in Sirajganj.
Over the past 24 hours, water levels at Sirajganj and Kazipur points have increased by 7 centimeters, now flowing 147 centimeters below the official danger mark.
This marks the third rise in recent weeks and has already begun affecting low-lying areas across five upazilas: Kazipur, Belkuchi, Shahzadpur, Chauhali, and Sirajganj Sadar.
Several agricultural lands and homes have been lost to river erosion.
Crops, including jute, sugarcane, and peanuts are submerged in many areas, while erosion is intensifying in vulnerable char regions.
The Water Development Board is monitoring the situation and implementing preventive measures in erosion-prone zones.
