Seven rivers in the Chattogram division might rapidly swell between July 25 and 27, with two potentially crossing their danger marks, triggering flash flooding in Feni, warned the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre on Tuesday.

In a special bulletin issued on Tuesday afternoon, the FFWC said that the heavy to very heavy rainfall caused under the influence of a potential low pressure would trigger the flooding.

The rivers at risk of rapid swelling are the Gumti, Muhuri, Selonia, Feni, Halda, Sangu and Matamuhuri.

The Muhuri and Selonia are likely to cross their danger marks, inundating fresh areas and deteriorating situation in parts of Feni already affected by flooding, said the FFWC.

Low-lying areas in Parshuram upazila of Feni was hit by a flash flood after India reportedly opened barrage in Tripura, sending massive volumes of water towards downstream Bangladesh on Monday morning, causing the Muhuri to rise by 321cm between 6:00am and 9:00am on Monday.

The low pressure likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on July 24 may bring heavy to very heavy rain in Chattogram division and its adjacent area in the upstream in India.

Over the period of the low completing its landfall, it might cause 200–250mm rain, the FFWC forecast said.

In the 24 hours until 9:00am on Tuesday, the FFWC said, the Gumti rose 140cm, flowing 349cm below the danger mark.

The Muhuri, on the other hand, dropped 116cm in Parhusram but swelled 113cm in Horipur. The Selonia rose 122cm at Suber Bazar, the FFWC said.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said that the low might form over the Bay of Bengal tonight or early tomorrow potentially moving onto land, causing most of the rain in Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.

The low pressure is unlikely to gather much strength for it is likely to move onto land within hours of formation, said meteorologist AKM Nazmul Hoque.

‘Khulna, Barishal and Dhaka are also likely to witness rain under the influence of the low, potentially between July 25 and 27,’ he said.
