Gazipur Agricultural University on Thursday observed the July uprising through a series of programmes aimed at honouring its legacy and inspiring democratic and environmental consciousness among students.

The programmes began with a rally, which was followed by a tree planting programme, symbolising the unity of democratic spirit with a vision for a sustainable future, said a press release on Friday.


Vice-chancellor of the university Professor GKM Mustafizur Rahman and ambassador of Algeria to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani each planted a fruit sapling near the administrative grounds of the university.

Chaired by the VC, the Algerian ambassador attended as chief guest at a seminar at the Sufia Kamal Auditorium of the university.

Abdelouahab Saidani expressed his admiration for GAU’s achievements and environment, calling it ‘a truly exceptional university’.

He also expressed optimism for deeper future collaboration.

Special guests included GAU treasurer Professor Md Safiul Islam Afrad and Diplomat World executive editor Nazinur Rahim. Also present were faculty deans, directors, provosts, teachers, students, registrar and university staff.

The event featured screenings of documentaries on the July uprising and GAU’s history and achievements.

Professor Nasrin Akter Ivy, director of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell, delivered the welcome address.

Awards were distributed to winners of the university-wide essay competition marking World Environment Day 2025.

In his closing remarks, the VC noted, ‘The July 2024 uprising remains a bold chapter in our democratic journey, reflecting the courage of common people and youth. Today’s programmes aim to awaken that spirit among our students.’
