The police have arrested four people over the July 2 attack on and vandalism at the Patgram police station in Lalmonirhat for snatching two convicts, while Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday denied involvement in the attack.

About 200-250 people attacked and vandalised the police station at about 10:30pm on July 2 that left seven police personnel, including its officer-in-charge, injured, according to police.

On July 2 evening, Patgram upazila nirbahi officer Uttam Kumar Das detained Belal Hossain and Sohel Rana during a mobile court while they were reportedly taking money from transport workers in the Sororbazar area on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari Highway along Patgram.

The UNO sentenced them to one-month each in prison on extortion charges.

While reading out a written statement at a press conference at the Patgram municipality, the BNP central executive committee member Hasan Rajib Pradhan said that there was no involvement of the BNP Patrgam upazila and municipality units in the attack on and vandalism at the police station.

‘But some media outlets have spread misleading news about this. The BNP did not take responsibility for the misdeeds committed by any individual in the name of the party in the past and it will not do it in the coming days,’ said Rajib.

He said that the district BNP had formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the incident.

The BNP leader, however, claimed that the National Citizen Party chief organiser for North Sarjis Alam’s Facebook post blaming the BNP was ‘intentional and purposive’.

Lalmonirhat district superintendent of police Md Torikul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that four people had so far been arrested in this connection and they were trying to arrest the other accused.

‘We are trying to find out the attackers’ political connections. The investigation is under way,’ the SP said.

The police official said that they had estimated about Tk 18 lakh-20 lakh in damages for the vandalism at the police station.

The police have filed a case against 27 people, including the two convicts in the mobile court, over allegations of attacking and vandalising the Patgram police station.

On July 3 night, Patgram police station sub-inspector Hamidur Rahman filed the case against 27 named persons and unnamed others.

In the case, the police alleged obstruction of government work, beating a government employee with the intention of murder, damaging and stealing government property and intimidation.

That night, the police in association with the Rapid Action Battalion arrested three of the unnamed accused and one of the named accused.

The Patgram police sent the arrested to court on Friday.

Among others, the named accused include Habibur Rahman, general secretary of BNP ward 5 of Baura union, Mohidul Islam Manik, organising secretary of Patgram union’s Swechchhasebak Dal, Abul Kalam, a night watchman at the local market in Patgram municipality’s Dharla More area, and Abdur Rashid, an employee of a restaurant at Patgram’s Bhitar Bazar.
