Bangladesh recorded the year’s single-day highest five Covid deaths in 24 hours ending 8:00am on Sunday.
During the same period, the country recorded 36 new cases of Covid-19, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
Of the deceased, four are men and one is a woman.
Three of the deaths were reported in Chattogram and one each was reported in Dhaka and Rajshahi, said a press release issued by the DGHS.
With the new deaths and cases, the number of Covid deaths this year has risen to 16, and detected cases have increased to 433.
The highest number of daily deaths reported earlier this year was two, recorded on separate days. Sunday’s toll marks a new peak for 2025.
Bangladesh first detected Covid cases on March 8, 2020.
So far, 29,515 people have died of Covid-19 in Bangladesh, according to the official account, and the cumulative number of Covid patients has reached 20,51,978.
On June 11, the DGHS issued a warning about the rise of new Covid-19 Omicron sub-variants, potentially triggering a fresh wave of infections.
The DGHS introduced 11-point directives urging people to avoid public gatherings, wear face masks, and practice frequent hand washing.
Due to the rising infection rates in India and increasing domestic positivity, DGHS emphasised precautionary measures.
DGHS director general Md Abu Jafor also advised booster doses for individuals over 18, pregnant women, seniors, and immunocompromised people, urging them to visit vaccination centers.
However, people in open places were seen to be uncared for the directives, while the government had no measure to implement the directives.
