Indian Border Security Force pushed 172 more people into Bangladesh through borders in Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Meherpur districts on Sunday.

Of the fresh push-in incidents, 121 were pushed through two border points in Baralekha upazila of Moulvibazar district, 32 through Nayagram border point in Beanibazar upazila of Sylhet district and 19 through Mujibnagar border in Meherpur district, according to the Border Guard Bangladesh and police officials.


The number of people pushed into Bangladesh by India since May 7 has thus reached 700 though the BGB and the police took tight security measures along the border.

Indian BSF and Navy have begun pushing people, including Indian nationals and Rohingyas, into Bangladesh since May 7. 

The BSF pushed 153 people into Moulvibazar and  Sylhet districts on Sunday, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Staff Correspondent in Sylhet reported quoting BGB-52 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Hasan.

According to Mehedi Hasan, the BSF pushed 79 Bangla-speaking individuals through the Shahbajpur border point and 42 people through the Pallatal border point in Baralekha upazila of Moulvibazar and 32 others through Nayagram border point in Beanibazar upazila of Sylhet at about 3:00am.

‘The BGB personnel of Latu and Pallatal border outposts in Baralekha and Nayagram border outpost in Beanibazar detained the individuals immediately after they were pushed into the Bangladesh territory,’ he said, adding that the detainees were handed over to the respective police stations in the morning.

Baralekha police station officer-in-charge Abul Kashem sarker said that maximum of the detainees were residents of Kurigram district and its neighbouring areas and they had been working in different states of India for long.

Beanibazar police station officer-in-charge Ashraf-Uz Zaman said that the BGB had handed over 32 detainees to the police station in the morning.

Mujibnagar police station officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman said that Indian BSF pushed 19 Bangladeshi nationals, staying in India, through Mujibnagar border at about 4:00am on Sunday.

‘All of them are residents of Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts. We will hand over them to families,’ he added.

India has begun pushing people, including Rohingyas and Indian nationals, into Bangladesh since May 7 when a war-like situation prevailed between India and Pakistan.

According to the BGB, it has detained 603 people from numerous border areas in districts, including Khagrachari, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Feni, Cumilla, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur and Panchagarh, since May 7.

According to Bangladesh authorities, Bangladesh has 4,156 kilometers of border with India, of which some 180 km fall on water bodies over various parts of the country and 79 km on the Sundarbans.
