
An extortionist allegedly shot a plant nursery owner on Tuesday in broad daylight at Gulshan in Dhaka city after he refused to pay extortion money.
Injured Shariful Alam Karim, 35, has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, according to the police.
He runs a nursery business near Gulshan Lake.
Victim’s uncle-in-law Mohammad Jahid Hasan alleged that an extortionist named Picchi Rubel had been demanding Tk 20,000 extortion from Shariful since last month.
‘Shariful refused to give the money. Following this, Picchi Rubel and three to four individuals waylaid him on Tuesday afternoon on a road at Gulshan-1 and pressed for the extortion,’ he said.
At one point, they shot him, leaving him seriously injured, he said, adding that later, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Quoting on-duty doctor at DMCH, its police outpost in-charge Md Faruk said that the victim’s condition was critical.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner for Gulshan zone Md Al Amin said that on information they sent two teams on the spot and DMCH.
‘We are investigating the incident,’ added the police official.
