At least three journalists were injured in an attack on Wednesday, allegedly carried out by Bangladesh Nationalist Party activists on the Supreme Court premises.

The incident occurred following a scuffle as BNP activists reportedly stood at a spot that blocked some television cameras in front of the Annex Building at about 11:50am, according to a statement issued by the Law Reporters Forum.

The injured journalists are Javed Akhtar of ATN News, Hasan Jabed of NTV, and Azizul Islam Pannu of Deepto TV. Jabed was taken to Islami Bank Hospital in Kakrail for treatment.

Witnesses said that the journalists were waiting near the Supreme Court Annex building in the morning to cover statements from lawyers regarding the verdict in a 1994 case in connection with an attack in Ishwardi on a train that was carrying Awami League president Sheikh Hasina.

A row reportedly broke out between some BNP activists, who arrived from Pabna ahead of the verdict, and the journalists over blocking the view of the cameras.

During the altercation, 20–25 BNP activists allegedly swooped on journalist Javed Akhtar and also attacked his fellows as they rushed for his rescue, leading to Hasan Jabed and Azizul Islam Pannu being injured.

The incident happened at the presence of Habibur Rahman Habib, adviser to the BNP chairperson, and other party leaders and activists from Pabna were present at the scene, witnesses said.

The situation was eventually brought under control after BNP legal affairs secretary Kayser Kamal and special assistant to the BNP chairperson Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas intervened.

Protesting at the attack, journalists staged a sit-in protest in front of the Annex Building, demanding justice and they also boycotted the scheduled briefing of the lawyers regarding the verdict.

Kayser Kamal did not respond to phone calls by ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· for comments.

The Law Reporters Forum condemned the attack in its statement.
