Former professor of Jahangirnagar University, M Harunur Rashid, passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital on Tuesday.
Harunur Rashid, also former president and director general of Bangla Academy and president of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, had been suffering from cancer. He breathed his last at the Ibn Sina Hospital.
He was 85. He is survived by two sons.
His namaz-e-janaza was held on Baba Hujur Mosque premises at Kazipara in the capital.
鈥楬e was buried after Isha prayers on the Baba Hujur Mosque premises,鈥� said Bangla Academy director Sarkar Amin.
In a condolence message, Bangla Academy director general Professor Mohammad Azam expressed profound shock at the death of Harunur Rashid, and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family.
Born at Tinsukia district of Assam in British India on December 28, 1939, Harunur Rashid earned his bachelor and master鈥檚 in English from Dhaka University. Later, he pursued further education at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
A professor of the JU English department, Harunur Rashid also served different administrative positions at the university. He also taught at the North South University, and International Islamic University Chittagong at its Dhaka branch.
His literary works include 鈥楬ajar Bachharer Swapna鈥�, 鈥楤hasha Chintay O Karme鈥�, 鈥楽wapner Moroke Ichchhar Basabas鈥�, 鈥楢ll Praise be to Him鈥�, 鈥楳oments in the Mirror鈥� and 鈥楤asanta Biphale Jaay鈥�.
For his contribution to translation, he was awarded the Abu Rushd Literary Award.
