Former professor of Jahangirnagar University, M Harunur Rashid, passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital on Tuesday.

Harunur Rashid, also former president and director general of Bangla Academy and president of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, had been suffering from cancer. He breathed his last at the Ibn Sina Hospital.


He was 85. He is survived by two sons.

His namaz-e-janaza was held on Baba Hujur Mosque premises at Kazipara in the capital.

‘He was buried after Isha prayers on the Baba Hujur Mosque premises,’ said Bangla Academy director Sarkar Amin.

In a condolence message, Bangla Academy director general Professor Mohammad Azam expressed profound shock at the death of Harunur Rashid, and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family.

Born at Tinsukia district of Assam in British India on December 28, 1939, Harunur Rashid earned his bachelor and master’s in English from Dhaka University. Later, he pursued further education at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

A professor of the JU English department, Harunur Rashid also served different administrative positions at the university. He also taught at the North South University, and International Islamic University Chittagong at its Dhaka branch.

His literary works include ‘Hajar Bachharer Swapna’, ‘Bhasha Chintay O Karme’, ‘Swapner Moroke Ichchhar Basabas’, ‘All Praise be to Him’, ‘Moments in the Mirror’ and ‘Basanta Biphale Jaay’.

For his contribution to translation, he was awarded the Abu Rushd Literary Award.
