The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology on Monday announced its election commission to hold its student union elections after a long gap of 28 years.
The 13-member commission is an all-male body,
The university had its last student union elections in 1997.
University registrar Syed Salim Mohammad Abdul Kadir at an event held in front of the administrative building on Monday evening unveiled the names of the election commission members to be tasked with holding the polls.
Vice-chancellor Professor AM Sarwaruddin Chowdhury, pro-vice-chancellor Professor Md Sajedul Karim, treasurer Professor Ismail Hossain and student counselling and guidance affairs director Ishaq Miah, among others, attended the event.
At the time, the registrar also announced that industrial and production engineering Professor Abdul Mukit Mohammad Mokaddes was appointed the chief election commissioner.
Other members of the commission are: biotechnology and genetic engineering professor Md Kamrul Islam, civil and environmental engineering professor Md Misbah Uddin, political studies professor Md Nazrul Islam, public administration professor Ashraf Siddiqui, Bangla department professor Md Rezaul Islam, food engineering and tea technology professor GM Rabiul Islam, mathematics professor Rezwan Ahmed, chemistry professor Md Mahbubul Alam, social work professor Md Abdul Jalil, anthropology professor Monjur-Ul-Haider, architecture department professor Iftekhar Rahman and English department associate professor Rajik Miah.
The registrar said that the election commission would carry out all activities required to hold the SUCSU (Shahjalal University Central Student Union) and hall union elections following the existing regulations.
Vice-chancellor Professor AM Sarwaruddin called on the students to fix an election schedule through discussions with the election commission.
‘At the same time, you all should help the election commission to organise a fair and acceptable election,’ he urged.
Earlier on October 22, SUST students staged demonstrations on the campus, demanding immediate announcement of an election road map.
The authorities responded to the demand with assurance that the election commission and road map would be announced within this week.
Chief election commissioner Professor Mokaddes told reporters that they would convene a meeting soon to settle the election road map by the current week.
‘We hope to conduct a fair and participatory election with everyone’s assistance,’ he added.
