
Vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam at a programme in Dhaka on Monday said that medical science should be applied in the interest of patients, not for business interests or corporate influence.
He made the remark at the programme organised to observe the World Hepatitis Day 2025 at the BMU, said a press release.
Prejudices and discrimination regarding hepatitis should be removed. Patients should not be deprived of treatment in any way, the VC said, adding that medical services should be provided to patients, including writing prescriptions following the guidelines.
If they are equally effective, only low-cost drugs should be prescribed. There are a lot of patients in this country, so there is a lot of research opportunity, this opportunity must be utilised, mentioned Professor Shahinul Alam.
Bangladesh Medical University observed the World Hepatitis Day 2025 with the theme ‘hepatitis: let’s break it down’.
Public awareness rallies and scientific seminars were also held on the occasion of the day organised with the slogan ‘be aware, save lives’.
BMU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam was chief guest while its pro-VC for administration Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad, pro-VC for research and development Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader and treasurer Professor Dr Nahrin Akhtar were present as special guests at the programme.
Detailed information was presented in the scientific meeting held in three sessions by Professor Dr Md Golam Azam, Professor Dr Md Ruknuzzaman, Professor Dr Md Mohsen Chowdhury, Professor Dr Bidhan Chandra Das, Dr Lubana Akram, Dr ABM Shafiullah, Dr Md Zahidur Rahman, Dr Sharmin Sultana and Dr Arifa Tasnim.
It was informed that hepatitis is not just a disease; it is a matter of human rights, health equity and social justice.
In the fight against this disease, a joint initiative of the government, health workers, media, development organisations and the common people is required.
On the occasion of the day, a special programme has been taken by the departments of hepatology, gastroenterology, paediatric gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery and virology at the initiative of the BMU VC.
The main objective of observing the day is to create public awareness about hepatitis A, B, C, D and E, and to create awareness about the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the disease.
The convener of the World Hepatitis Day Celebration Committee Professor Dr Md Dewan Saifuddin Ahmed, chairperson of the department of gastroenterology and secretary general of the Bangladesh Gastroenterology Society Professor Dr Dewan Saifuddin Ahmed, member secretary of the celebration committee Dr Saiful Islam Elin, and teachers, physicians, residents, hepatobiliary surgeons, paediatric gastroenterologists of the Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology were present at the event.
