Information adviser Mahfuj Alam has called for a political reckoning over the legacy of the 1971 Liberation War, demanding a formal  apology from the war crimes collaborators and said that the pro-Awami League left-leaning parties must not go unpunished.

His comments came in a Facebook post hours after the interim government announced a ban on all Awami League activities, including online ones, under the Anti-Terrorism Act until the International Crimes Tribunal’s trial of the party and its leadership is completed.

‘The issue of 1971 must be resolved,’ Mahfuj wrote.

‘The collaborators of the war criminals must apologise. Anyone wishing to engage in politics in Bangladesh must abandon pro-Pakistan ideology. Pakistan committed genocide in this country. (Although Pakistan officially apologised and even if the country agrees to apologise again, the collaborators have yet to apologise.),’ he said, referring to Pakistan’s role in the 1971 Liberation War.

Mahfuj said that attempts to justify or downplay the genocide must be brought to an end.

He also warned against acts of sabotage within the forces associated with the July uprising.

In the second part of his Facebook post, Mahfuj said, ‘There is no forgiveness for the left-leaning parties supporting Mujibism.’

‘They are the masterminds behind the League’s abductions and killings, and the massacre during the anti-Modi protests at Shapla Chattar,’ he wrote.

Mahfuj said that despite being engaged in despicable subservience during the July uprising, the left-leaning parties now remained unscathed.

‘Still now the leftists supporting Mujibism continue to betray the July uprising both culturally and intellectually. Even from within the country, they are conspiring against the forces aligned with July uprising,’ he said in the Facebook post.

He said, ‘These B-teams of the League will soon be defeated.’
