At least 137 people were killed and scores injured in mob beating, attacks, arson, and clashes with the police in Dhaka city and elsewhere in the country since Monday after the forced resignation of Sheikh Hasina amid mass uprising triggered by student protests for quota reform in government jobs.

Miscreants also attacked different government establishments, including Prime Minister’s official residence Ganabhaban, chief justice’s residence, National Parliament building, Awami League headquarters, police headquarters and stations, government banks, residence of AL lawmakers and ministers in the capital and other places across the country.


Between 3:00pm on Monday and 10:00pm Tuesday, at least 53 people in Dhaka, 20 in Jashore, eight in Kusthia, four in Natore, three in Barishal, seven in Cumilla, seven in Noakhali, 10 in Satkhira, three in Feni, one in Narail, two in Chandpur, three in Khulna, four in Chuadanga, six in Lalmonirhat, three in Chattogram and Kurigram each were killed according to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondents who confirmed the deaths  through hospital sources and police officials along with United News of Bangladesh reports.

Apart from these, death toll from recent violence over quota reform protest between July 16 and August 5 noon till Sheikh Hasina’s resignation was 373.

In the capital, at least 53 people were brought dead or declared dead during this period.

Of the deceased, Dhaka Medical College police out-post in-charge Bachchu Mia said that at least 17 bodies, mostly with severe physical assault signs and bullet wounds, were brought during this time.

In Uttara, 13 people were declared dead in Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital and Uttara Crescent Hospital, said the hospitals’ officials. 

Hospital officials in Gonoshasthaya Kendra declared 10 people dead, National Institute of Neuro Sciences and Hospital declared two people dead, and Enam Medical College Hospital declared 11 people dead during this period. 

Lakshmipur union parishad chairman Selim Khan and his son Shanto Khan were beaten to death in a public outrage at Forkkabad Bazaar in Balia Union in Chandpur on Monday afternoon, confirmed Chandpur superintendent of police Saiful Islam.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported that at least four people were burnt to death after the agitating people set Natore-2 constituency lawmaker Shahfiqul Islam Shimul’s residence on fire on Monday evening.

One of the deceased was identified as Akib Hossain, 17.

The identity of the three other deceased could not be established their bodies were charred.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Barishal reported that three people burned to death on Monday afternoon at the residence of city Awami League secretary and former city mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah were identified on Tuesday.

They were identified as Moin Jamaddar, 45, Noor Islam, 45, and Prashanto, 34.

Assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Barishal station Belal Uddin confirmed.

The victims were close aides of Sadek Abdullah, local sources told.

Our correspondent in Cumilla reported that more than 50 protesters attacked the house of former councillor Shah Alam in Ashoktala in Cumilla city and set the house on fire on Monday night.

Local people on Tuesday recovered the bodies of seven people from the house.

The victims were identified as Ashok, 14, Shakeel, 14, Shaon, 12, Mahfuzur Rahman Mukul, 22, Roni, 16, and Mohin, 17.

Our correspondent in Noakhali reported that at least seven people, including four police members, were killed in a clash between the police and protesters at Sonaimuri police station on Monday afternoon.

A five-star hotel Zaber International was set on fire at 3:00pm on Monday in Jashore town, minutes after the prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation was announced, killing 20 people, including an Indonesian national and injuring at least 100 others, confirmed Jashore General Hospital super Harun-Or-Rashid.

He said that the deaths were reported from Monday afternoon to Tuesday evening. 

The hotel is owned by ruling Awami League Jashore district unit general secretary Shaheen Chaklader.

Our correspondent in Satkhira reported that at least 10 people were killed, including Assasuni upazila Awami League vice-president Jakir Hussain, in two separate incidents in Assasuni and Sadar upazilas from 5:00pm to 11:00pm on Monday.

Our correspondent in Lalmonirhat reported that six students were burnt to death while setting fire to the Awami League joint secretary Shakhawat Hossain Sumon Khan’s house in the district on Monday.

Our correspondent in Feni reported that three Awami League leaders, including Mosleh Uddin Hazari Badal, Mushfiqur Rahman and Abul Bashar Badsha, were lynched by mobs in separate incidents in the district on Monday and Tuesday.  

Our correspondent in Narail reported that Mazed Ali Khan, 30, was killed in a mob beating beside Borashula Eidgah at around 7:30pm following vandalism in Awami League leaders’ houses and party offices.

He was taken to Narail Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead, confirmed the duty doctor Alok Kumar Bagchi.

United News of Bangladesh reported killing of three people in Kurigram, three people in Khulna, eight people in Kusthia, three people in Chattogram, four people in Chuadanga and six people in Lalmonirhat.

The houses of two lawmakers of the just dissolved parliament and over 100 leaders and activists of Awami League were vandalised and set ablaze on Monday night in Lalmonirhat.

Lalmonirhat Fire Service reported the recovery of six charred bodies from the from the fourth floor of the residence of district Awami League joint secretary Suman Khan at about 4:30am.
