Several people were injured during a clash reportedly among the supporters of two factions of the United People’s Democratic Front, a political party based in the Chittagong Hill Tracts on Tuesday.

The clash broke out when supporters and activists of the UPDF and UPDF (Democratic) took out separate processions to mark the first anniversary of the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime.

Local people said that when the procession of the UPDF (main) led by its chief Prasit Khisa reached Chengi Square from Swanirbhar Bazar, they were confronted by the supporters and activists of the UPDF (Democratic) who also brought out a procession at about 10:30am.

A video of the incident went viral on social media, showing firing of blank shots spreading panic in the area.

Khagrachari Sadar police officer-in-charge Abdul Baten said that he heard that several people from both groups were injured in the incident.

The two groups clashed and chased each other, injuring several people, he said.

‘We have heard about the blank shots but we are yet to confirm the matter,’ he added.

Both the groups blamed each other over initiating the attack.

Alleging that UPDF (Democratic) members attacked their procession, UPDF (main) spokesperson Ongya Marma said that several, including an elderly woman, was injured in the incident.

Blaming the other group for the incident, UPDF (Democratic) central committee organisational secretary Amar Jyoti Chakma said that no shooting occurred during the clash.
