Gazipur Agricultural University commemorated the July uprising day with various programmes at the GAU in Gazipur on Tuesday.

The day’s events included a commemorative prayer, discussion, blood donation campaign, photo exhibition, documentary screening and a cultural evening, said a press release.


Marking the day, GAU vice-chancellor Professor GKM Mustafizur Rahman named the university’s administrative front square as ‘July 36 Square’.

The day began with a blood donation and blood grouping campaign at the university’s medical centre.

A grand victory rally filled with placards and slogans marched across the campus, symbolising unity and resistance. The rally was led by GAU VC and University Grants Commission of Bangladesh member and chief guest Professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, with active participation from faculty, students, officers and staff.

Following the rally, a photo exhibition was held beneath the faculty of agriculture, capturing the courageous moments of the July 2024 uprising.

A memorial discussion was held at the Begum Sufia Kamal Auditorium, which was presided over by the GAU VC.

The session began with prayers for the martyrs.

The welcome address was delivered by registrar Md Abdullah Mridha.

The discussion featured reflections from Professor Tanzimuddin Khan, special guest treasurer Professor Md Safiul Islam Afrad and Student Welfare director Professor Mohammad Sharif Raihan as moderator.

Tanzimuddin Khan remarked that July 2024 was not just an uprising, but a powerful statement for justice, democracy and human rights. ‘We must ensure that the sacrifices of the martyrs are never forgotten.’

Professor GKM Mustafizur Rahman paid tribute to the brave youth who sacrificed their lives, saying, ‘This day is not just a date, it is living history, a symbol of national awakening.’

‘It is our duty to preserve this spirit through collective effort and commitment to the nation’s progress,’ he added.

Representatives from all university groups delivered remarks by students Hafsa Sharmin and Sazzatul Islam Shawon, employees Dulal Hossain and Abu Hanif Palowan, faculty association leaders Professor Md Abu Ashraf Khan and Professor Md Moshiul Islam and faculty members Professor Md Golam Rasul and Professor Nasrin Akter Ivy.

A documentary produced by GAU on the July 2024 uprising was screened, reliving the historic and harrowing moments of the struggle.

The day concluded with a cultural evening, portraying the timeline of the uprising through performances.
