Finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed on Tuesday said proposed 35 per cent duty by the United States on Bangladeshi export products was not a final settlement.

The final settlement would be done through one-to-one negotiation, he told reporters after a meeting of the advisory council committee on government purchase at secretariat.

A team from Dhaka is already in Washington to negotiate over the tariff issue with the United States Trade Representative, he said, adding that the meeting would take place on Wednesday morning Bangladesh time.

The finance adviser was answering questions regarding the US president Donald Trump鈥檚 letter posted to Trump鈥檚 Truth Social platform unveiling higher tariffs for Japan, South Korea and a dozen other countries including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand, South Africa and Malaysia.

Products from Indonesia will face a 32 per cent tariff, while the level for Bangladesh is 35 per cent and Thailand, 36 per cent.

These mark a step up from the 10 per cent levy the president earlier imposed on almost all trading partners.

But the starting date of August 1 marks a delay in Trump's reimposition of higher duties, originally due Wednesday.
