The committee, tasked with investigating the recent death of a pedestrian by the fall of a bearing pad on him from the metro rail line, has its report submission deadline extended for 10 more days.
Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited managing director Faruque Ahmed gave the information while he was addressing a discussion with journalists on Wednesday.
He also said that they targeted to start the public operation of the metro trains on the Motijheel-Kamalapur section under the Mass Rapid Transit Line-6 project from January 2027.
The company on the day organised the discussion on the current issues of the Dhaka metro rail with reporters for rail and road at its headquarters in Uttara in the capital.
Currently in Dhaka the country’s first ever elevated and fully air-conditioned metro rail services are operational on the Uttara-Motijheel route under the line-6 project.
After the bearing pad fall killed Abul Kalam Azad at Farmgate on October 26, a five-member probe committee was formed the same day and was asked to submit report within two weeks.
The next day on October 27, the authorities revised the probe committee by placing it under the supervision of special assistant to the chief adviser Sheik Moinuddin following criticisms over the committee’s composition.
DMTCL managing director Faruque Ahmed on Wednesday at the discussion said that the committee was scheduled to submit its report this week but they extended the deadline by 10 more days due to complexities of the investigation.
He said that three more experts were added to the committee.
The managing director also said that they investigated all the pillars physically and installed brackets around 10 pillars so far.
‘Under the contract, the consultants did not recommend for the spare of the bearing pads and that is why we do not have spare bearing pads,’ he said.
Faruque said that purchase order for spare bearing pads was also issued which they expected to get by January first week in 2027.Â
‘Our first priority is public safety and then public convenience,’ he said.
About the line-6 project progress, the MD also said that civil works of Motijheel-Kamalapur section would be completed by this November.
Work, including electrical, mechanical and signalling, were going on above the Kamalapur station, he further said.
After completing the trial run on the Motijheel-Kamalapur section by the fourth quarter of 2026 they would go for public revenue operation from January 1 in 2027, he further said.
About the project’s proposed 7.5 kilometres extension from Diabari to Tongi, pre-feasibility study had been done, while the DMTCL was looking for funding now, he added.
The company’s other senior officials also attended the discussion.
