A group of people on Thursday afternoon once again vandalised and set fire to the abandoned central party office of Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, in the capital’s Gulistan area.
Videos circulating on social media showed that a crowd gathered and held sit-ins there since Thursday morning protesting against Awami League’s ‘Dhaka lockdown’ programme.
Some agitating people were also seen vandalising founding president of the country Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s graffiti on the wall of the building while some people set fire to trash left inside it.
Different groups, including Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, July Joddha Sangsad and Inqilab Mancha held sit-ins in front of the party office, which was left abandoned since the ouster of Awami League regime through July uprising on August 5, 2024.
The party office was vandalised and set on fire several times since the ouster of the Awami League regime.
Awami League announced a ‘Dhaka lockdown’ on social media for Thursday.
The day was scheduled for announcing the date of delivering the International Crimes Tribunal’s verdict in a crimes against humanity case against ousted prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina for atrocities committed across the country during the July uprising.
Several incidents of arson and crude bomb attack occurred days after Awami League announced the lockdown programme.
