University Press Limited has launched Professor Ali Riaz’s new book ‘A fractured path: challenges of democratic transition in Bangladesh’ delving into the country’s political course after the July uprising.

According to a press release, the analytical work seeks to answer pressing questions: What direction has Bangladesh taken after the July 2024 uprising, and whether genuine democracy has taken root, or if it is a mere imitation, comparing the country’s transition with that of other nations in similar crises.

Professor Riaz, who served as the vice-chair of the National Consensus Commission and the chief of the Constitution Reform Commission, both formed under the interim government, offers a critical examination of Bangladesh’s constitutional reforms and the work of the consensus commission in the aftermath of the uprising.

A distinguished professor of political science at Illinois State University in the United States, Riaz is also the president of the American Institute of Bangladesh Studies.

In his book Riaz situates the country’s political evolution within the wider context of developing nations’ struggles for democracy against the backdrop of global experiences in democratic transition, according to the release.
