A bullet fired from across the Myanmar border pierced the tin roof of a house in Teknaf’s Whykong union on Sunday morning, triggering panic among residents living near the frontier.
The incident occurred around 8:00am at the house of one Ayub Islam in Amtali village under Ward No. 2 of Whykong union, said union parishad chairman Principal Nur Ahmed Anowari.
Quoting family members, he said that gunfire was heard from the direction of the Myanmar border earlier in the morning. Moments later, a loud noise was heard on the tin roof. Upon inspection, they found a hole in the roof and later recovered a bullet lodged in an inner wall.
The chairman added that the house is located about two and a half kilometres from the border, saying it was alarming that a bullet could travel such a distance. ‘The family is now living in fear,’ he said.
He further mentioned that on Saturday afternoon, a bullet fired from the Myanmar side had struck a computer shop in the Techchi Bridge area under Ward No. 3 of the same union. A woman named Chenuara Begum sustained minor injuries while walking on the roof of her house during that incident.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sheikh Ehshan Uddin said locals were advised not to panic.
‘We are in communication with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) regarding the matter,’ he added.
