Tensions along Myanmar border intensified again as repeated gunshots were heard on Sunday night in the Myanmar side adjacent to Bangladesh’s Tambru and Ghumdhum borders in Bandarban district.
Local people living in the two areas that fall in Naikhyangchari upazila said that their fear heightened amid the intense fight across the border. Â
Meanwhile, the police on Monday morning arrested a man suspected to be a member of the Arakan Army in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar with an AK-47 rifle, said Ukhiya police officer-in-charge Arif Hossain.
‘A team of the BGB [Border Guard Bangladesh] detained him and handed him over to us. We have filed a case under the Arms Act,’ he added.
Quoting the detainee, the OC claimed that he was a Bangladeshi citizen from a national minority community living in Bandarban.
The man crossed the border and got involved with the Arakan Army, the police officer said, quoting him. Â
Azizul Haque, a resident of Ghumdhum in Bandarban along Myanmar border, said that he heard gunshots at about 11:30pm on Sunday.
‘We are now living in fear,’ he added.
Naikhyangchari upazila nirbahi officer Muhammad Mazharul Islam said that he had no information of gunfight happening on Sunday night, but had information of gunfight across the border in the same area about a week ago.
‘As the situation in Myanmar is tense, sound of gunfight is often heard,’ he added.
He said that an elephant was injured in mine explosion on Sunday at Tambru border.
