Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir described several recent fire incidents in the country, including the one at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, as premeditated.

The BNP leader also demanded a full investigation.

In a statement issued on Saturday Fakhrul said that the public perception was that these incidents were interconnected.

‘These fires are pre-planned. Both domestic and international adversaries are still active, seeking to undermine the success of the people’s uprising,’ the statement read.

He expressed deep concern over the fire at Shahjalal’s Cargo Village on Saturday, calling for a proper investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

He said that the violence appeared aimed at challenging the people’s dream of an egalitarian Bangladesh and destabilising the country, orchestrated by supporters of a fascist regime.

Fakhrul also raised concerns over inadequate firefighting measures, stressing the need to enhance fire safety arrangements and hold those guilty accountable.

He extended his wishes for the swift recovery of those injured in the fire.

The fire broke out around 2:30pm on Saturday at the airport’s cargo village in Dhaka city.
