
Police on Sunday sought a five-day remand to interrogate Sahab Uddin, one of the main suspects in a case filed over widespread looting of stones from Sadapathar, a popular tourist destination in Bholaganj area at Companiganj upazila in Sylhet.
The court, however, ordered sending the accused to jail in the case without hearing the remand prayer.
Earlier, at about 11:15pm on Saturday, a team of the Rapid Action Battalion-9 arrested Sahab Uddin, a former president of the Companiganj upazila unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, from Kumarpara area in Sylhet city and handed him over to the Companiganj police station early Sunday, RAB-9 media officer AKM Shahidul Islam Sohag said.
Sylhet court inspector Md Jamshed Alam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Sahab was produced before the court of senior judicial magistrate Druba Jyoti Pal at about the noon on Sunday after submitting a prayer to grant five days of remand for him in police custody.
Sahab was suspended by the BNP from all levels of party positions on August 11 for his alleged involvement in the looting of stones from the Sadapathar tourist spot.
Companiganj police station officer-in-charge Md Ratan Sheikh told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Sahab Uddin, 54, was one the main suspects in the case of stone looting.
He said that Bureau of Mineral Resources director general Mohammad Anwarul Habib on August 15 filed the case against 1,500 unnamed people on charge of rampant looting of stones from Sadapathar.
The looting resulted in a public outcry that prompted the government to launch stone recovery drives and reshuffle the local administration.
The Anti-Corruption Commission is also investigating the looting incident.
Local people alleged that unscrupulous people having political connections took advantage of the fragile law and order situation after the 2024 regime change to loot the stones and sand from several areas — Sadapathar and Utma Chhara at Companiganj upazila, Jaflong tourist spot at Goainghat upazila, Rangpani tourist spot at Shripur under Jaintapur upazila and Lobha Chhara at Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet district.
